Broadcasting newsroom sports internship (Wichita, Kansas)

Program Objective:

To expose students to the daily demands and challenges of a digital media and broadcasting operation, provide real-world application of skills learned in college and prepare students for future employment in sports media (on-air, online, and in print).

Program Goals:

Students should learn how a newsroom sports department works (who does what, how we get sports news and verify information). Proper journalistic writing and formatting for broadcast and web. How to edit video for broadcast and web. What goes into producing a sportscast (writing, editing, stacking, showcasing). How to use “news judgment” to decide what and how stories appear in newscasts. How to best engage our viewers across multiple platforms including social media.


All internships must be for university/college credit. Interns will be expected to work approximately 20 hours per week. The schedule will be arranged by the intern, the internship coordinator and the intern’s academic advisor. Interns must possess computer and typing skills and have completed at least one broadcast journalism writing course. The internship is unpaid.

What You Will Learn:

You will learn about the Catch It Kansas sports department, and how it works together with the newsroom. You will start learning the basics of programs we use every day like ENPS, Stratus/Edius, and Latakoo. You will learn about our digital and social media plans and how to engage viewers on multiple platforms. You might get the chance to cover sporting events with our team of MMJs and producers.

You should have producers, anchors or reporters go over scripts and video daily. You should meet with the internship coordinator at least once a week to review your progress. By the end of your internship, you should be able to write and edit stories for sportscasts, stack a segment, write and post stories to the web, and engage viewers through social media.

Working Conditions:

Duties are performed mostly indoors in a noisy, fast-paced newsroom; Employee will be exposed to atmospheric conditions; Sitting for extended periods of time is required; While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to stand, walk, talk, hear, use hands and fingers, reach, grab, handle or feel, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. Regularly sit, talk, and hear.

Dress code:

You are expected to dress and act professionally. This means appropriate business attire. No tank-tops, flip-flops, hats or ripped clothing.
