Nature of work:
This position is responsible for local news coverage and works under the direction of the Managing Editor. This position supervises staff reporters, assign stories and schedules work.

This position functions as the second in command of the newsroom. The person in this position must work closely with the Managing Editor to develop the news product and maintain high journalism standards.

Essential functions
Schedules the work hours of reporters and copy editors to maximize efficiency.

Formulate story ideas and projects.

Responsible for the city beat and writes regular news stories as assigned.

Assigns stories.

Helps plan, execute, direct and review local news coverage.

Provide quality photographs for publication.

Cultivate and maintain excellent communications with contacts in assigned beats.

Lead editorial team in managing editor's absences, to include story planning, assignments and editing.

Paginate pages news, lifestyle and sports pages as necessary.

Work with other departments as necessary to ensure newspaper's success.

Adhere to all company policies as outlined in employee handbooks.

Other duties as outlined by supervisor.

Must be able to travel to and from assignments.

Knowledge, skills and abilities
Must have an excellent working knowledge of newspaper journalism.

Must be able to plan and director work and effectively supervise others.

Must have working knowledge of journalism standards and libel laws.

Must have a working knowledge of InDesign, Quark and Photoshop.

Must be able to work effectively and efficiently under deadlines.

Must work well with others.

Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Must be able to work flexible shifts. Nights and weekend work should be expected.

Education and experience
Minimum three yeas experience in editing, design, layout and reporting.

Computer experience required, InDesign, Quark and Photoshop knowledge preferred.

Some supervisory experience required.

Journalism, communications or related degree preferred or acceptable equivalent experience.

Work environment
This position works in the office in the field covering assignments.
