The Vera Institute of Justice, founded in 1961, is an independent, non-partisan, nonprofit organization that combines expertise in research, technical assistance, and demonstration projects to assist leaders in government and civil society examine justice policy and practice, and improve the systems people rely on for justice and safety. Vera has offices in New York City, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, and New Orleans, and its projects and reform initiatives, typically conducted in partnership with local, state, or national officials, are located across the United States and around the world. Vera seeks a graduate student intern to join its Communications Department for Summer 2017. The intern will assist in drafting, editing, posting, and analyzing a variety of materials, including social media copy, digital analytics reports, report engagement summaries, press and media mentions, and explainer video scripts.

Vera’s communications department is charged with ensuring that the institute’s work product is accessible and meaningful to government officials, researchers, practitioners, the media, funding sources, and the general public. The position requires no specific expertise in criminal justice research, policy, or practice. However, the successful candidate will be passionate about social media, curious about the range of Vera’s activities in the field of digital communications, and have a demonstrated commitment to social justice.


This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated graduate student to join a dynamic and innovative staff. The intern will report to the digital community manager. Candidates must have some social media/digital communications/online marketing experience and must be able to analyze and distill a focused message from multiple sources and perspectives. Experience in specifically translating social science, legal, and government jargon into clear, accurate, and engaging social copy is a plus, as is any background with social media analytics or compiling digital summaries. In addition, a basic familiarity with scanning online media for mentions of Vera and/or issues relevant to Vera’s work is beneficial.


  • Demonstrated experience in social media and/or digital communications 
  • Familiarity with other social justice organizations working in the social media space, and an idea of what makes social copy perform well
  • Superior writing, editing, and verbal communications skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with staff on all levels
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills and reliable attention to detail
  • Flexibility and ability to work on a number of projects simultaneously under pressure
  • Familiarity with the following a plus:
    • Tweetdeck, Bit.ly, Facebook Business Manager, Twitter Ads/Analytics
    • Google Drive, Google News/Alerts
    • Adobe Photoshop


Applicants are encouraged to seek independent funding and Vera will assist the student meeting the any requirements. Alternative compensation will be arranged for students who do not have outside funding.
