J-School student to help with Summer Games Olympic coverage for NBC
LAWRENCE — Let the Summer Games begin.
Two months shy of his 20th birthday and midway through his sophomore year at the University of Kansas School of Journalism and Mass Communications, Nick Couzin is counting down the days until the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Aug. 5-21. The J-School student from Chicago will play a role in the worldwide coverage of the Games as part of NBC’s paid internship program for the Olympics.
“I was extremely excited to be accepted into the program,” Couzin said. “I am fortunate in such an early part of my KU experience to be associated with two highly recognizable names — NBC and the Olympics."
Couzin will report in mid-July to the NBC sports studios in Stamford, Connecticut, for the internship, scheduled for July 16-Aug. 20. Inserting advertisements in promos and cutting down highlights will be among his responsibilities.
In preparation for the experience, Couzin has maintained his own sports blog and co-produced and co-hosted 785 Live, a sports talk radio show on KJHK 90.7 FM. He also has been the golf beat writer for the University Daily Kansan and has called men’s and women's basketball games on KJHK. Couzin is a campus correspondent for HERO sports, reporting stories and producing video packages.
“I’ve had an amazing experience so far at KU,” Couzin. “The J-School allows you to be involved in various media such as writing, play-by-play and producing shows. I had several samples of my work to share in the application and interview process for the internship. That all made a huge difference.”
Couzin’s advice to his fellow Jayhawks pursuing internship opportunities: “You should design a resume specifically for the position you are applying for,” he said. “Since I was applying for a job that had a strong multimedia focus, I listed all of my TV accomplishments first.”
