AAAS Minority Science Writers Internship

AAAS offers the Minority Science Writers Internship for students who are interested in pursuing a career in science journalism. The internship will take place in the summer at the Washington, D.C. Open to any minority undergraduate with an interest in science writing. Preference to those pursuing a degree in journalism. The program is a paid, 10-week experience under the guidance of the weekly magazine’s award-winning staff of professional science writers and editors.

Application Instruction: 

The 2018 online application will be open from Oct. 16th 2017 - Feb. 1st 2018

In order to apply you must first identify 2 faculty members to write letters of recommendation for you. Discuss the internship with them and give them sufficient notice to write your letter.
The online application will require you to upload the following documents in PDF form.

  • Resume, including any honors, awards, and relevant activities (file name: "your last name_resume")
  • Unofficial transcripts of your undergraduate course work (file name: "your last name_transcript")
  • Two writing samples. At least one should be about a news event that took place after October 15, 2016. (file name: "your last name_writing sample#1")
  • Application Essay: In <800 words, tell us about yourself and why you are interested in this internship including:
    • Your commitment to journalism;
    • Your thoughts about science and science writing;
    • Your career goals;
    • What you hope to get out of this opportunity. Include any classes, experiences, affiliations, etc. that you think will make you an ideal candidate for this internship.
