Summary:
The KU Leads Internship is a professional development role to heighten and strengthen education and working professional experience. Students will develop time management skills, work in a team environment, and learn valuable hands-on experiences working in a fast paced, high level, historic athletic department. The main focus for this position is supporting the KU Leads department in the promotion of their efforts to provide student-athletes' educational, personal and professional development while sharing the powerful stories of our unique student-athletes and staff. This position will provide exposure and experience in creating content, promoting and attending events, outreach and collaboration, research and development, and special projects. 

This is a for-credit internship with an estimated workload of 120 working hours and 3 credit hours. The tentative duration of this position is one semester; opportunity to extend for a second semester may be available.

Duties and Responsibilities of all Positions at Kansas Athletics:

  1. Adhere to University, Big 12 Conference, Kansas Athletics and NCAA policies and procedures;
  2. Maintain knowledge of departmental activities, sports schedules and procedures;
  3. Foster cooperative working relationships with fellow staff members within the department;
  4. Support the athletics departmental goals and philosophies as described by the Director of Athletics, and works to achieve and uphold the department’s mission statement and core values;
  5. Maintain a positive attitude toward performing job duties and working with other staff members;
  6. Exhibit professional decorum at all times while representing Kansas Athletics, including routine events and meetings that occur outside of the office and on the road;
  7. Maintain the confidentiality of all information obtained while an employee of Kansas Athletics including all private, confidential, or sensitive information and ensuring compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and other applicable regulations.

Assignments of this Position: 

  1. Attend KU Leads events and initiatives;
  2. Manage KU Leads online social media presence for @KU_Leads account on Instagram and X (Twitter);
  3. Promote events through digital platforms and online engagement including, but not limited to: highlight stories of individual and team success within areas of leadership, personal, and professional development; capture and create compelling post-event summaries, quotes, and takeaways;
  4. Collaborate with KAI communications and creative teams to ensure brand consistency;
  5. Perform research to identify storytelling and brand engagement improvements; strategize ways to enhance online presence and engagement;
  6. Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • University of Kansas student enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per semester (fall/spring);
  • Good academic standing with the University, and remain in good academic standing through the internship;
  • Experience with digital content creation and editing tools (Canva, Adobe Suite, etc.)
  • Ability to manage multiple projecdts and ongoing deadlines, problem-solve and have a solution focused approach to challenges and improvements
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Be team-oriented, intrinsically motivated, and have excellent organizational skills;
  • Must possesses a strong attention to detail;
  • Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed during peak game and recruiting seasons;
  • Maintain a valid state issued driver’s license. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of collegiate sports, or previous athletic experience in general;
  • Experience with social media platform use and engagement, including Instagram and X;
  • Photography and/or videography skills;
  • Computer literacy and expertise, knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a team or committee.

Work Environment 
This job operates in a professional office. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers and various digital devices, including, but not limited to:  cell phone, printer, copy machine, and other related devices. This job requires flexibility and adaptability in schedule and the ability to perform job related duties on short notice.

Physical Demands 
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. This position may require frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 25 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; and working in all weather conditions.

Travel 
Travel is not required for this position.

Hours of Work
This is a part-time position.  Days and hours of work will vary based on the needs of the position. Early morning, evening and weekend work maybe required. Units establish internships for a fixed duration of time not to exceed 13 months and not to exceed 15 hours weekly during the academic year or 25 hours weekly during the summer months unless HR, in consultation with appropriate administrative offices, authorizes an extension or more hours weekly.
