Promotion and Tenure Procedures for a Direct Hire
The School’s Promotion & Tenure Committee will review a candidate for a direct hire and recommend to the Dean of the School of Journalism whether to extend an offer, and if so, at what rank and tenure status.
The Dean will initiate the review early in the semester in which the offer is to be made by providing a statement to P&T making the case for the direct hire. The statement will include a position description with expectations for teaching and scholarship (research and creative activity) and an explanation of how the candidate fits the long-term goals and staffing strategy of the School.
The candidate will provide a current CV and statements on teaching and scholarship, using the form required by the University in normal cases of promotion and tenure. The P&T Committee chair will schedule a presentation on scholarly activities by the candidate, and the chair will organize three-person subcommittees, one for scholarship and one for teaching, to review the candidate’s record and report to P&T.
The process ends with a vote on the candidate on or before November 1 or April 1, for fall and spring semesters respectively, with the resulting recommendation sent to the Dean.
