Undergraduate Admission Requirements

Find Yourself at the J-School!

Whether your interest is multimedia journalism, digital marketing communication or media arts and production, your passion for journalism and media will thrive here. You'll develop and hone skills in writing, research, critical thinking and communication to succeed at KU and beyond.

Path 1: Direct Admission from High School

Students will be considered for admission directly out of high school if they:

• Admitted to KU by assured admission and

• 3.25 or higher high school GPA on a 4.0 scale (no test scores required/regardless of test score submitted) or

• 3.00 or higher high school GPA and 21 ACT/1060 SAT (or higher)


Path 2: Prospective Transfer Students

Students must first meet admission requirements for the University of Kansas

Considered for admission if:

  • 2.5+ transferable GPA and
  • 2.5+ Journalism GPA* and
  • C (2.0) or higher in JMC 101 (or equivalent)
    • *Students with only JMC 101 can be admitted with a 2.0 Journalism GPA

Current KU Students

Considered for admission if:

  • 2.5+ KU GPA and
  • 2.5+ Journalism GPA*, and
  • C (2.0) or higher in JMC 101
    • *Students with only JMC 101 can be admitted with a 2.0 Journalism GPA. 

International Students

Apply through the Office of International Recruitment and Undergraduate Admissions


Admission to the Journalism Minor

Considered for Admission if

  • 2.5+ KU GPA (or 2.5+ transferable GPA if no KU GPA has been earned) and
  • 2.5+ Journalism GPA* and
  • C (2.0) or higher in JMC 101
    • *Students with only JMC 101 can be admitted with a 2.0 Journalism GPA

Staying in the JMC School

All students admitted to the JMC School must do the following in order to remain in the JMC School and in good standing:

  1. Maintain a 2.5 KU grade-point average, AND
  2. Maintain a 2.5 Journalism grade-point average. 

Students failing to meet the conditions above are placed on academic probation for one semester. If a student does not raise their cumulative and journalism grade-point averages to 2.5, they are dismissed from the JMC School.
