Iles Award for Research in Editing: Call for Applications

The Bremner Editing Center at the University of Kansas School of Journalism and Mass Communications is pleased to announce the second annual Iles Award for Research in Editing. This award of $1,000 is intended to support research pertaining to the teaching or practice of editing written language. The Iles Award is made possible by a generous gift to the Bremner Fund at the University of Kansas and honors the legacy of John Bremner, editing professor and author of “Words on Words” and “HTK.”

Eligibility

  • Faculty, graduate students, independent scholars and corporate/industry researchers are welcome to apply for the award.
  • Research projects must be conducted in the U.S.
  • Projects are not limited to journalism; editing of any professionally published written content may be the subject of research.

Application process

  • Applicants need to submit a single PDF containing:
    • A cover page with the names, employers and contact information of everyone working on the project.
    • A separate description of the project of no more than 500 words that includes:
      • The question(s) the research seeks to answer and the project’s potential applications to the practice or teaching of editing.
      • The method by which data will be gathered.
      • The plan for sharing/publishing results of the project.
      • No names or other identifying information of the applicant(s).
  • All materials must be in English.
  • Email applications to Bremner Center Director Lisa McLendon at lisamclendon@ku.edu.
  • Deadline for submissions is April 15, 2025.

Judging:

  • A panel selected by the Bremner Center will anonymously review applications and select the winner.
  • The Bremner Center director manages the process but does not judge the entrants.
  • The winner will be announced in mid-May.

One winner is chosen each year. The judging committee reserves the right not to make an award if no applications sufficiently reflect the criteria; an additional award may be bestowed in a subsequent year.
