Special Events and Volunteer Manager
PBS Kansas Channel 8, the PBS public media affiliate for Central Kansas, seeks an experienced, energetic and goal-oriented person to join our development team. This person manages fundraising events; managing the volunteer program of over 180 volunteers, assisting with marketing events (social media, news releases, landing page copy, ads, on-air promos, and more), co-hosting on-air pledge nights, and performing other development/promotional duties as assigned.
The right candidate for this position will have a strong background in event management; volunteer program management; demonstrated public relations and marketing skills; and excellent personnel management skills. They will demonstrate strong writing and public speaking skills, and they will have a strong belief in the value of non-profit public broadcasting.
The position requires some evenings and weekends. This position will remain open until filled.
Responsibilities
• Plan and execute large annual revenue-generating events for PBS Kansas, including the Antiques Fair, High Tea, Veterans Coming Home (Distinguished Veteran Service Awards), and the Holiday Extravaganza of Prizes, and provide support to the Senior Expo.
• Work with the account executives to create event sponsorship opportunities for underwriters.
• Manage volunteer program, including scheduling volunteer coverage, writing and distributing volunteer newsletter, recording volunteer hours, maintaining volunteer database, and planning and executing an annual volunteer appreciation event as well as the Volunteer of the Year Award.
• Work with the Membership Department to track revenue for events.
• Work with the Marketing Department to write event press releases, advertising copy, social media posts, brochures, and website landing pages.
• Work with Production Department to provide copy and assets for promotional spots.
• Work with Programming Department to schedule promotional spots.
• Work with Pledge Producer to co-host on-air nights.
• Maintain a strong presence in the community by attending community events and giving talks about PBS Kansas.
Education and Experience
Required
• Demonstrated experience coordinating successful fundraising events
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Public speaking experience
• Experience in creating executing a departmental strategic plan
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to effectively meet deadlines
• Self-motivated, independent, collaborative, calm under stress, and outcomes-driven
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and the ability to learn Memsys
Preferred
• Undergraduate degree in journalism, communications, marketing, integrated marketing, hospitality or event management
• Strong sales background
• Experience working with and managing volunteers
• Experience in creating content for a variety of promotional media from website copy to on-air promotions
