Women's Basketball Freelance Reporter

Work alongside an award-winning daily newspaper and online news staff, covering a Division I women’s basketball team that has experienced a recent run of success. The Lawrence Journal-World is seeking a freelance reporter to cover the WNIT champion Kansas women’s basketball team throughout the 2023-24 season for our newspaper and for our popular KUsports.com website.

The freelancer’s primary responsibility is to attend the KU women’s home games at Allen Fieldhouse throughout the season and turn around thorough stories on tight nighttime deadlines. Other duties include contributing quick recaps of road games, potentially reporting and writing feature stories centered on the team, and more depending on the reporter’s interests. This opportunity requires someone who has had some experience in writing for publication, either through a student publication or otherwise. Ability to follow instructions, reliability, and good grammar skills also are requirements for the job.

Games fall on nights, weekends and occasional holidays between November and March, with about three games taking place per week during the Big 12 Conference schedule. The freelancer will be paid on an article-by-article basis.

The Journal-World’s print and digital products are popular and well-respected. This is an excellent opportunity for a journalism student nearing graduation to learn more about the rigors and rewards of sports reporting.

For additional information, contact Sports Editor Henry Greenstein at hgreenstein@ljworld.com or 785-832-7227. There may also be other occasional freelance opportunities available at the Journal-World in high school sports or KU golf, tennis, soccer, volleyball, etc., but this is the one chance to be a beat reporter all season long.
