General Assignment Reporting Intern


The Warrensburg Star-Journal is accepting applications for a summer 2024 general assignment reporting internship.

The Star-Journal is a 2,000-circulation twice-weekly newspaper in Warrensburg, Missouri. It is the primary news source for Johnson County.

Under the direction of the editor, the news intern will work with each of the reporters in the Star-Journal newsroom during the summer to write stories and briefs, take photos and help reporters with news gathering or research. Interns will also help with other routine newsroom duties, such as typing announcements and other small projects as assigned by the editor.

Candidates should be enrolled in college and working toward a journalism or communications degree. Experience with a college newspaper is strongly preferred. Must have access to a vehicle and a valid driver’s license. Candidates should have the ability to communicate effectively through written stories and professional interactions with the community and coworkers.

The internship will be May through August. Times and days of work vary but may include some evenings and weekends. The intern and the editor will work together to determine a work schedule for the summer. The intern will receive a stipend based on the number of hours worked.

Experience with Microsoft Office, Macintosh and Adobe Photoshop is helpful. Basic photography skills are also preferred.

Candidates must have attention to detail, ability to meet a nightly deadline, work well in partnership with coworkers and community members, and clear and concise writing skills.
