High School Sports Freelance Reporter

Work alongside an award-winning daily newspaper and online news staff, serving as the beat writer for a local high school program. The Lawrence Journal-World is seeking a freelance reporter to contribute high school sports stories to our newspaper and the LJWorld.com website.

The freelancer’s primary responsibility is to cover a specific school's sporting events in Lawrence and surrounding areas and turn around thorough stories on tight nighttime deadlines, with a particular emphasis on Friday night football in the fall. Other duties include writing previews for these games, potentially reporting and writing feature stories centered on high school sports, collaborating with the Journal-World’s full-time sports writers, and more depending on the reporter’s interests.

This opportunity requires someone who has had some experience in writing for publication, either through a student publication or otherwise. Ability to follow instructions, reliability, and good grammar skills also are requirements for the job.

Games fall on nights and some weekends. The freelancer will be paid on an article-by-article basis.

The Journal-World’s print and digital products are popular and well-respected. This is an excellent opportunity for a journalism student nearing graduation to learn more about the rigors and rewards of sports reporting.
