About Veteran Excellence Magazine

Veteran Excellence Magazine is a national digital publication and independent newsroom covering the veteran ecosystem through long-form narrative and investigative journalism. We are building a remote editorial pipeline for journalism and mass communication students, and we are taking interns for academic credit.

What you will do

Our interns do not do busywork. You will be assigned one of eleven standing newsroom beats and work it ike a reporter.

• Pitch your own stories to your editor and develop them from the ground up

• Secure and conduct interviews with national figures, policymakers, and subject-matter experts

• Write long-form narrative features that run 1,000 to 1,500 words

• Fact-check your own copy and verify quotes with sources before layout

• Join remote editorial desk planning and manage your own filing schedule

Every piece carries at least one original interview you conduct yourself, and nothing runs on secondhand reporting. Profiles follow our structural framework, and other reporting forms are open by pitch.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate journalism, mass communication, or related media program

• Strong narrative writing and real copy-editing instincts

• Comfortable identifying and contacting sources on your own initiative, including senior national figures

• Self-managed time and steady communication habits for remote work

• Strict adherence to journalistic ethics and close attention to detail

• Something a campus paper cannot teach you, which is how to ask a veteran what their service cost and then do right by the answer

Academic credit and supervision

This internship is unpaid and structured for academic credit only, through your school's standard student internship agreement. We tailor your weekly schedule and milestones to your institution's internship course requirements, and we complete the midpoint logs, final evaluations, and supervision paperwork your faculty coordinator requires so your credit clears cleanly.
