Journalist

The award-winning Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter, nestled in the heart of Ellsworth County (Kansas), is searching for a journalist to add to our team.

The I-R has a rich history of community journalism, and provides a wide variety of opportunities for either a budding or seasoned journalist. The weekly newspaper earned the sweepstakes award in its division in the 2024 Kansas Press Association Awards of Excellence, in addition to 31 individual staff awards.

While located in rural Kansas, stories abound. Our staff covers city and county government stories, as well as school and hospital boards. These essential stories are in addition to the regular features and spot news published in both the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter and its sister publication, The Marquette Tribune.

We are searching for a candidate who has strong written and/or visual skills. Staff members both write and photograph their own stories, and I-R publisher Karen Bonar is willing to help coach a candidate who possesses one skill, but has room to grow in the other.

About Ellsworth County: Home to Ellsworth, Wilson, Kanopolis, Lorraine and Holyrood. Each community brings a rich cultural experience to the mix. Ellsworth is primarily known for its Cowtown history, and Wilson, the Czech Capital of Kansas, is home of the famed World's Largest Czech Egg as well as the After Harvest Czech Festival. With about 6,300 residents, Ellsworth County is rural, but the county seat is a mere 45-minute drive to Salina or an hour to Hays.

About the I-R and Tribune: We are privately-owned by the Morris family who owns Morris Multimedia, Inc., based in Savannah, Georgia. Our staff enjoys editorial independence and nearly 100 percent local news content. Decisions about coverage, design and content are made locally.
