Biography

Carol Holstead has taught in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications since 1991. She’s an associate professor with a professional background as a magazine writer and editor for a leading business-to-business publisher in Kansas City, where she started a national magazine for supermarket florists. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in theater from Kansas State University. She’s taught a wide range of classes in the decades she’s been at the school, including courses in reporting, magazine publishing, design and writing, visual communication, public speaking and the school’s freshman media survey course, Media and Society.

She is deeply interested in how students learn and has written articles about teaching for The Chronicle of Higher Education. She also has a research interest in magazine design. She is a frequent judge for the National Magazine Awards, the most prestigious awards in magazine journalism and design.
