Biography

Jackie Liu is a doctoral student and graduate teaching assistant at William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at The University of Kansas. Before doing his Ph.D., he earned a Master's of Arts in Communication and Bachelor of Science at Pittsburg State University in communication with a broadcasting emphasis and a digital media minor and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in bilingual broadcast announcing and hosting arts from Sichuan Normal University in China.

Jackie's research agenda intersects health message design, especially information tailoring, with cross-cultural communication. He has done research exploring the techniques to implement to better the design of medical leaflets for prescribed stimulants. In his dissertation, he endeavors to propose the concept "second-level mode tailoring," examines the effects of that while taking into consideration the role of individualistic/collectivistic culture in the communication process. He has published health communication studies on Frontiers in Communication and Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Insights. Jackie is a student member of the National Communication Association, Chinese Communication Association, and the Association for Chinese Communication Studies.

Jackie has a passion for teaching as he has taught courses in business writing, media writing, broadcasting, video production, media literacy, speech, and media diversity. He has done numerous works in journalism, broadcasting/filmmaking, and the podcasting fields. He has produced a KAB student award-winning documentary called "Love Has No Boundaries," and has participated in the individual short film "Killing Feng" as the co-director and director of photography. He has also produced his own cooking show "Jackie's Kitchen" which won the finalist of the South-Central Broadcasting Society Competition in 2016. Jackie is a recipient of the 2021-2022 Vincent Wasilewski Scholarship from the Broadcast Education Association.

Besides working, Jackie enjoys playing badminton, making friends from all over the world, and traveling. He is a member of USA Badminton.
