Biography

Rim H. Chaif is a Ph.D. candidate in Journalism and Mass Communications at the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas. Originally from Algeria, she holds a master's degree in Intercultural Studies and Media Education from the University of Calabria, Italy, and a master's in Institutional and Corporate Communication from the National School of Journalism and Information Sciences, Algeria.

Before pursuing her doctorate, Rim worked as an investigative and humanitarian journalist for over seven years, reporting on marginalized communities and social issues across Europe and North Africa. She has collaborated with international organizations including the European Union Agency for Asylum, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, and the Global Press Institute, and served as a Climate Change Ambassador in Denmark, where she designed and facilitated science communication workshops for international audiences.

Rim's research sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, science communication, and social problems, examining how people navigate health and scientific information in digital spaces, and how AI-powered methods can surface marginalized voices in public discourse. Her work applies machine learning, natural language processing, and large language models to large-scale social media datasets, with a particular focus on reproductive health, gender, and digital advocacy. Her findings have been published in leading peer-reviewed journals including Social Media + Society (5-Year Impact Factor: 6.8), Digital Health and Health among others. She has 9 peer-reviewed publications, 10 manuscripts under review, and has received multiple competitive awards including First Paper and Best Student/Faculty Paper Awards from AEJMC, a Doctoral Fellowship from the Institute for Policy and Social Research at KU, and the Outstanding Instructor Award from the University of Kansas. She is fluent in Arabic, French, English, and Italian.
