Statement regarding violence and hate against Asian Americans
The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications stands in solidarity with Asian American students, alumni, staff, faculty and community members. The school recognizes the climate of fear created not only by acts of senseless violence such as the March 16 shooting in Atlanta, but also by the microaggressions Asian Americans have been subjected to, ranging from othering to scapegoating. As a journalism school, we also recognize the role that media has played in creating and recreating racial stereotypes, from news stories repeating racists’ views to advertising campaigns reinforcing racial stereotypes. We pledge to continue using education to eradicate the harm that racism, sexism and phobias perpetuate in our society.
